Today we are celebrating a little-known Holiday.  Sure, they tell the kids in school that in “1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue” but do we really know the meaning of Columbus Day?  I do!

It’s Bugaboo’s first scheduled holiday of the school year.

Should be fun.  And while I am home celebrating with Bugaboo by flinging woodchips and taking numerous baths (well, that’s how he celebrates every day) I’ll be thinking about how Columbus did NOT really discover America (more likely a Carribean Island) and how it is really just a day that became popular with Italian-Americans back in the 1800s as a way to celebrate their heritage, since he was technically the first person from Italy to arrive here (though that is disputed and he died in Spain…hmmm…). I am also going to be thinking about how over Eighty people were arrested in Columbus Day protests last evening.  Oh, and Bugaboo is off but Bug Boy is not (and he goes to a PUBLIC school).  And the banks are closed.  No mail.  And in some places?  They celebrate Native American Heritage Day instead.  Go figure.

Just because I’m the type to get up on my soapbox I am hoping they are NOT teaching this view of popular history to my son in his school. He has made no mention of it and seemed confused when I mentioned it. Thank goodness. But they still kind hint on Pilgrims and Indians and still insist on Halloween parties at his school (which I am vehemently opposed to, as well as every other flipping party celebrated at schools, but that is a different post for a different day).  Can’t win ‘em all. And I am not gonna be the parent that becomes so unpopular with the teachers and staff that they dread me entering school grounds. Because I am a nice mom and don’t want him to be embarrassed to have me as a mom.
